Saint Francis of Assisi was born in the city of Assisi around 1181 or 1182. He was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant and grew up in comfortable surroundings. During his youth he enjoyed parties, music, and the company of friends, known for his cheerful and generous character. 

Like many young men of his time, he dreamed of becoming a knight and gaining fame and prestige. However, behind those dreams an inner restlessness began to grow within him, one that would eventually lead him to discover a very different calling.
