Due to illness and physical exhaustion, Francis spent his final years in great suffering. Even so, he always maintained an attitude of serenity, hope, and trust in God.
He died on October 3, 1226, at the Porziuncola, near Assisi, surrounded by his brothers. Franciscans call this moment the "Transitus," because they consider it the definitive passage into eternal life.
