After being freed, Francis returned to Assisi greatly weakened. Shortly afterward he suffered a serious illness that forced him to rest for months.
That period changed the way he saw the world. As he recovered his health, he began to understand that happiness did not depend on wealth or social recognition. His heart increasingly turned toward God and toward serving others.
