At the height of the Crusades, Francis traveled to Egypt with the desire to promote peace and proclaim the Gospel. There he managed to meet with the Muslim sultan Al-Malik al-Kamil.
Despite their religious differences, the two held a respectful and cordial dialogue. This meeting is considered one of the most important examples of dialogue between cultures and religions in the Middle Ages.
