Francis's witness and way of life attracted other young men who wanted to live as he did, following the Gospel in a simple and radical way. The first companions joined him to share a life of prayer, work, and service.
This is how the Franciscan fraternity was born. The brothers lived in poverty, proclaimed peace, and helped those most in need. What began as a small group soon became a movement that spread to many places.
